Description
/ CONTEXT Delsan AIM was contracted by General Motors of Canada Limited to perform the complete decommissioning, demolition and soil remediation of the GM Ste-Thérèse Plant. The facility consisted of a Firebird/Camaro Assembly Plant and Paint Shop encompassing a building area of over 186,000 square meters located on 105 hectares of land.
/ DECOMMISSIONING Delsan AIM decommissioned each building in preparation for demolition by disconnecting all the utilities; abating the asbestos-containing materials and removing and disposing of all designated substances including mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and lead as well as any residual products that remained in the equipment or piping.
/ ASSETS SALES Coinciding with decommissioning activities, Delsan AIM marketed and sold various assets from the facility.
/ DEMOLITION As the decommissioning and sales activities were completed for a particular building, demolition work commenced in a systematic manner. Demolition waste and scrap was segregated, stockpiled and shipped off site as the buildings were demolished. Delsan AIM recycled over 70,000 tons of ferrous and nonferrous metals during the course of this 19-month project.
/ CONCRETE CRUSHING Concrete demolition followed with the slabs being removed and then the footings and foundations to 0.6 meter below grade. The concrete rubble generated from this work was crushed on site by means of a mobile concrete crusher and completely reused for backfilling operations.
/ SITE REMEDIATION In addition, Delsan AIM undertook the environmental remediation of the site, which involved removing underground and above ground petroleum storage tanks as well as the removal and disposal of contaminated soils in various locations throughout the site.
