Petrochemical plant decommissioning
/ CONTEXT Delsan AIM was awarded a contract with Pétromont Inc. (a subsidiary of Dow Chemical Canada Inc.) to perform the turn-key decommissioning and demolition of two petrochemical plants in Québec – one located in Varennes and the second in Montréal East.
/ PROJECT Delsan AIM was responsible for the removal and disposal of all asbestos-containing materials from piping, tanks and building siding as well as the safe removal, handling and disposal of any remaining hazardous materials.
/ EQUIPMENT Delsan AIM utilized specialized excavators – equipped with shears, grapples, pulverizers and high-reach boom attachments – to complete the bulk of the demolition work. During this 19-month project, Delsan AIM processed and shipped approximately 27,000 tons of scrap metals off-site for recycling. Delsan AIM employed cranes to dismantle higher structures to a safe level as well as state-of-the-art demolition methods designed by structural engineers, in order to execute the controlled-collapse of reactors, towers, stacks and flare structures.
/ CHALLENGE The Montréal East Project presented some very restrictive and challenging work conditions as most of the pipe-racks in the plant still contained both live conduit and gas lines servicing other companies. Delsan AIM employed very stringent safety procedures and protocols to complete all demolition work on schedule and without incident, including the selective removal of redundant pipes and conduit from live pipe-racks.
/ FINAL PHASE During the final phase of the project, Delsan AIM demolished and removed all slabs, footings and foundations and crushed the concrete on-site for reuse.
