Description
/ CONTEXT The Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) – which is one of the largest university hospital centres in North America – recently undertook a major three year modernization project.
/ PROJECT Delsan AIM was contracted to decommission and demolish the Pavillon Roland Bock building (Hôpital Saint-Luc) in preparation for the construction of new hospital facilities. The building was a five storey, reinforced concrete structure with an exterior masonry façade. Delsan AIM was responsible for the disconnection of all mechanical and electrical services to adjoining hospital facilities; the abatement of hazardous building materials; and the demolition of the structure to ground level.
/ ABATEMENT The abatement program included the safe removal and disposal of hazardous building materials such as asbestos-containing pipe insulation and drywall; fluorescent light ballasts that contained polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs); as well as mercury-containing light bulbs.During the initial phase of the project, Delsan AIM performed the abatement work on the upper floors of the building, while the hospital maintained use of the ground floor where an MRI Unit remained in operation. The abatement program was executed under strict protocols in close coordination with hospital personnel in order to ensure the safety of workers, hospital personnel and patients as well as important diagnostic equipment.
/ DEMOLITION For the demolition phase of the project, Delsan AIM employed mast-climber work platforms to protect public roadways and critical hospital infrastructures. Small state-of-the-art demolition equipment was utilized to lower the building on a floor-by-floor basis, to a safe level in accordance with engineered guidelines. The balance of the building was systematically demolished utilizing an excavator equipped with specialized demolition attachments.
